Confirmation perfects baptismal graces enabling us to profess our faith with renewed strength as Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ through the strengthening of the Holy Spirit.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred during 5th grade, in the spring of the academic year.
Students in Grades 6 – 8, who move into the parish from another location or who were not confirmed in 5th grade and need to be confirmed, will have this need addressed as part of their religious education program (School, CCD, homeschooling in consultation with the Parish Catechist).
High school students and adults who need to be confirmed should call Blake Vajgrt, Parish Catechist, at 402-641-3872, for information regarding their particular circumstances. Typically, this formation takes place in the context of the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) as part of The Way: Discovering & Living the Catholic Faith course held at St. Peter.
Sponsor and Sponsor Forms
Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism, and the two sacraments (also including Holy Communion) are the Sacraments of Initiation. Thus they are united (see paragraph 1285 and 1288 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church).
The Church in her governing document, The Code of Canon Law, envisions that because the two are united and to show the unity between the sacraments as well as the sacred duty of the Godparent(s) that confirmand, one who is to be confirmed, should have his/her Godparent also serve as their confirmation sponsor (see Canon 893.2).
The parish asks that confirmands' sponsors should be a godparent or one of the godparents of the confirmand at baptism.
If this is not possible, a sponsor can be selected who meets these criteria:
- At least 16 years old.
- Must not be a parent of the confirmand.
- Must have received Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation.
- Participate weekly in Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligations.
- Believes and lives the teachings and practices of the Church.
- Willing to take on the responsibilities of sponsor to support and aid the parents and godparents in their baptismal promises.
- If married, married with a valid marriage according to the law of the Church.
- If single, not cohabitating with someone.
